Emergencies could happen anywhere. If the emergency is near your home or if it’s inside your home and you don’t have time to evacuate, you might need to shelter in place. Here’s how:
- Go to the safest place in your home. A basement is best. If you don’t have one, go to a room that is in the center of your home. This room should have no windows or as few as possible.
- Bring your emergency supplies or go bag with you.
- Make sure that no one, including your pets, goes outside.
- Bring your cell phone, if you have one. But do NOT use your phone unless it’s an emergency. Keep the phone line free for emergency calls.
- After you move to the shelter, use duct tape or plastic to seal off any doors, windows and vents. Make sure to remove the plastic or duct tape after a few hours to bring air back into the room. Otherwise, you might suffocate.
- Listen to the radio to find out the latest information.
